A bit of a surprise

I never usually read the comments below a piece of work when it is produced as a feature in a newspaper. After the first run of a story I worked on surrounding the role of women in Afghanistan we had some fairly sexist comments on the article which first went out in July. I ventured back onto the Daily Mail website last night as the images to promote the exhibition came out. Shocked and delighted I found it was the top trending article online I decided to read the comments, a few of which are below:

‘Wow these photos are incredible. The picture of the troops’ brightly coloured pants are such a contrast to the sandy background and everything war represents. Women have a way of beautifying even the most harsh of situations. I’m a man but I appreciate #GirlPower’

‘Thanking DM this time for a much deserved story and space on your newspaper than a Kadasian et all. It’s a more interesting, sensible, and thought provoking subject than how the celebrities dress themselves, how they look without make-up, etc… being fed daily here.’

  1. Rifleman Ross Mills sits with his adopted dog ‘Sharpie’ in an Army checkpoint in Helmand Province.
loved this picture I worked for 4 years in Iraq and 3 years Afghanistan as a contractor working alongside the Brit Mil, and I know the normalcy of having someone (even a dog or cat) helps in so many ways, it’s that little bit of sanity in a mad world, if fact liked all the picks but for me that one is special just look in his eyes it says it all job well done keep up the good work
